It's tempting to jump straight onto YouTube and order a custom-fabricated $15,000 trailer with stainless steel hose reels and a commercial generator. But if you're in your first year, keeping your overhead low is the key to survival. You can build a highly professional, high-output setup for under $1,500 if you buy smart.

1. Power: Generator vs. Battery Inverter

Your vacuum, steamer, and extractor require significant amperage. Here are your two primary choices:

  • Inverter Generators (Recommended): Standard open-frame generators are incredibly loud and will quickly annoy your residential clients. Opt for a quiet, enclosed inverter generator (like a Predator 2000 or Honda EU2200i). They run at under 60 decibels, consume very little fuel, and provide clean power that won't fry your polished electronics.
  • Dual-Battery Inverter Setups: If you detail out of a van or SUV and want a silent setup, you can install a heavy-duty deep cycle marine battery connected to a 2000W pure sine wave inverter. While quiet, you will need to charge it daily and manage your battery draw carefully.

2. Water: Tank vs. Client's Spigot

Do you actually need to haul a 100-gallon water tank? Not necessarily.

  • The Lean Method (Client's Spigot): In 90% of residential bookings, clients are more than happy to let you plug into their outdoor hose. This saves you from hauling 800 lbs of water, saving hundreds in vehicle wear-and-tear and gas.
  • The Independent Method (Water Tank): If you plan to service apartment complexes, office buildings, or commercial parking garages, a water tank is mandatory. A simple 50-gallon or 100-gallon poly tank with a 12V demand pump connected to your pressure washer is all you need to be 100% self-sufficient.

3. Don't forget your digital rig

Your pressure washer and vacuum are your physical tools, but your scheduling and payment system is your digital rig.
